In an upcoming interview with Canal+, France national team all-time record goalscorer Olivier Giroud (36) has revealed what he said to Karim Benzema (35) following the latter’s World Cup injury exit.
The 2022 Ballon d’Or winner left Qatar after picking up a muscle injury in training on Saturday, November 19th, before the competition had started. The following day, Benzema was on board an early morning plane to Madrid, leaving his teammates in the dark over his departure. French National team boss Didier Deschamps called no replacement for Benzema. Les Bleus went on to reach the final, which they lost on penalties against Argentina.
Restored to France’s front line and having scored three goals, against Australia, Poland and the winning strike against quarter-finalists England, Giroud has revealed what he told to the Real Madrid striker. The 2022 Serie A champion explained that he wrote a sincere and spontaneous message to Benzema as soon as he left France’s training camp. “I told him we were disappointed. I was disappointed to see him go.” Giroud rubbished the insinuation that some of the Frrench players were happy following Benzema’s departure. The 120-cap internation then slammed those “who are trying to search for disputes in a team where there were none.“
