Real Sociedad defender Robin Le Normand to opt for Spain

Spanish outlet AS report that Real Sociedad defender Robin Le Normand has begun proceedings to acquire Spanish nationality, and in doing so making himself eligible to be called up for the national team.

The Brest youth academy graduate has been with the Basque club since 2016, making a total of 162 appearances for the first team across all competitions and becoming a cornerstone of the squad’s recent success, with the San Sebastián-based team currently sitting in third place.

Although acquiring citizenship would usually require ten years of residency, 26-year-old can make a request to the country’s Superior Council of Sports in order to obtain an exception – should the council rule in his favour, he will be available for selection for La Roja. This is the same channel through which Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte, formerly of Athletic Club, was naturalised, and in the wake of an agreement signed between France and Spain in 2021, will not require him to give up French citizenship.
