Where Will Kylian Mbappé Be Playing His Football Next Season?

On June 14th, Kylian Mbappé rocked both Paris Saint-Germain and French football when he announced that he would not be extending his contract beyond next summer. That means that Didier Deschamps’ newly appointed captain will be able to leave the French capital on a free transfer in just 12 months’ time, and he has forced the record-breaking Ligue 1 champions to decide. Do they cling on to their prized asset as they did last season in the hopes of extending his contract and risk losing him for absolutely nothing, or do they cash in on their main man this summer?

While we all enjoy a good gamble, this question would be too much for us to answer, so we’ll stick with playing online casino games instead while the big gambles are left to those who yield power and money that cannot be measured. Probably no one gambles quite like PSG owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi who has already gambled once this summer with his decision to sack manager Christophe Galtier after a disappointing campaign. Yes, his side won the league for the 11th time however, round of 16 exits in both the UEFA Champions League and the Coupe de France have resulted in a less than satisfactory campaign, and as a result, the former Nice boss is now on the unemployment line.

As one can imagine, there will be no end of potential suitors for the 24-year-old, who is many people’s consensus pick as the current best football player on the planet. However, there are very few clubs that can realistically afford his astronomical wage demands. Al-Khelaifi had to move heaven and earth last summer to retain the services of Mbappé. However, he will have to do it all over again.

So, with, where will the lightning-fast attacker end up playing his trade next season? Let’s take a look at the contenders.

Paris Saint-Germain

Despite announcing his intentions to leave the Parc Des Princes at the end of next season, Mbappé has made it clear that he doesn’t intend to leave the French capital this summer. As such, his current club remains the favorite to retain his services even though they may well lose him for free in a year’s time. That depends entirely on the thinking of their owner, however.

Al-Khelaifi has already stated in recent days that it will take a fee of €150m to prize away their top scorer from the 2022/23 season, a fee that may well prove to be a snippet considering his age and level of talent. If a club refuses to pay that fee, do the club decide to entertain offers of a lesser value, or do they prioritize the success of their own club and hope that Mbappé can lead them to that elusive maiden UEFA Champions League crown in his final season with the club?

Since his move from AS Monaco six years ago, initially on loan for 12 months, before the deal was made permanent for a whopping €180m the following summer, Mbappé has developed into the finest football player in the world. He has led Les Bleus to back-to-back FIFA World Cup finals, and he showed just how good he was in Qatar last December with his blistering hat trick in the Lusail Iconic Stadium showpiece. Whether he can lead the Parisians to continental glory remains to be seen, however, Al-Khelaifi may well feel that the allure of one final shot at lifting the famous ‘Big-Eared’ trophy is too much to reject.

Real Madrid

If Mbappé is to leave the French capital, then there is one club that is the overwhelming favorite to secure his services. That of course is Real Madrid. Los Blancos launched an all-out assault last summer to lure the French international to the Bernabeu however, he ultimately opted to remain in his homeland.

However, the record-breaking 14-time European champions aren’t known for being deterred, and if there is any chance of bringing Mbappé to the Spanish capital, you can bet your bottom dollar that Florentino Pérez will do everything he can to make that dream a reality. Over two decades ago, the current Real president managed to successfully entice Luis Figo to swap the Nou Camp for the Bernabeu in a move that no one thought was possible. Will he do the same this summer?

The club has already brought in 19-year-old English midfielder Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund for a reported €103m. If they were to add Mbappé to their ranks as well, they may well be unstoppable. And with longtime striker and captain Karim Benzema leaving the club, they are in dire need of a new superstar up top.

One thing however that may put the 35-time Spanish champions off though is that €150m price tag, especially when they can bring him in for free next summer. But do they run the risk of missing out on him altogether should another club with similarly substantial coffers such as Manchester City decide to enter the race for his signature? Only Pérez knows what he will do next however, don’t be surprised to see the former Monaco star pull on that famous white shirt before the summer is out.
