Xabi Alonso joins José Mourinho & Thiago Motta as PSG managerial candidate whilst Christophe Galtier’s fate looks sealed

According to RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins, three names have emerged as leading candidates to replace Christophe Galtier at Paris Saint-Germain: José Mourinho, Thiago Motta, and, more recently, Xabi Alonso, the current coach of Bayer Leverkusen. The pursuit of Alonso has gained momentum since talks took place in Doha, but finalising a potential deal is expected to be challenging.

Recently, Xabi Alonso’s name has reportedly been prominent in discussions. The 41-year-old coach of Bayer Leverkusen may come as a surprise due to his relatively young age and lack of major managerial trophies. However, his ability to guide Leverkusen from 17th place to their current position of 6th in the Bundesliga, along with his preferred style of play, makes him an appealing candidate.

Initial contact has reportedly been made, but PSG will face two obstacles in their pursuit of Alonso. Firstly, the Spanish coach is reportedly interested in succeeding Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid if the Italian departs. Secondly, Leverkusen is eager to extend Alonso’s contract as soon as possible, with his name having also been linked to Tottenham. Alonso himself recently expressed happiness at Leverkusen and appeared unconcerned about his future.

Luis Campos, who will be in charge of sporting affairs at PSG next season, is already active in the transfer market and is closely monitoring the coach situation. He has his preferences, with José Mourinho still holding a prominent position along with Thiago Motta and Alonso.
