Auxerre crowned Ligue 2 champions

AJ Auxerre’s celebrations last weekend were proven not to be premature after they were crowned the champions of Ligue 2 in a goalless draw against Amiens SC yesterday evening.

It was only a brief dip into the second division for a club that has oscillated between promotion and relegation in the past three seasons after they were relegated on the final day of the season in the previous campaign.

In truth, it was all but mathematically confirmed that Auxerre would seal their place among the elite of French football. Their victory over Paris FC the weekend before had provided them an almost insurmountable cushion between AS Saint-Étienne and Angers SCO.

Who will join Auxerre?

And while the title has been secured with one game left to play, there is still a lot riding on the final matchday after Saint-Étienne dropped points. Angers are in pole position for the last automatic promotion spot, and if they can avoid defeat against USL Dunkerque then they will join Auxerre in their return to Ligue 1.
