Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta dreaming of France Euro 2024 call-up

Jean-Philippe Mateta (26) has told L’Équipe that he is dreaming of a shock call-up to France’s Euro 2024 squad, which is set to be announced later this week.

Mateta is having comfortably his most established season at Crystal Palace since making the move to London in 2021. He currently has 13 goals to his name and that form is catching the eyes of some big clubs, notably Napoli, according to a report from L’Équipe. The Serie A club reportedly view the French forward as a replacement for Victor Osimhen (25), whose time at the club is set to come to an end this summer.

However, before deciding his future at club level, Mateta harbours great ambitions for this summer. Mateta has 11 caps and three goals for the France U21 side, however, he has never been called up to the senior side. After a break-out season, he is hoping to receive the call from Didier Deschamps.

“My objective? Les Bleus! [A call-up] is so important to me. I won’t hide it, I’m thinking about the Euros, the France national team – it’s my No.1 objective, my childhood dream. I will watch the announcement,” said Mateta, who will be waiting in front of the TV in anticipation on Thursday, when Deschamps will name his 26-man Euros squad.
