‘He was the undisputable leader’ – PSG manager Luis Enrique praises Kylian Mbappé

Kylian Mbappé (25) may not have worn the armband during Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League victory over Barcelona (1-4, 4-6 agg.) on Tuesday night, however, he was showered with praise by his manager Luis Enrique, who described the Frenchman as the “undisputable leader of the team”.

After a largely anonymous display during the first leg defeat at the Parc des Princes a week earlier, the pressure was on Mbappé, who is likely competing in his final Champions League campaign with PSG, to perform and be the man to take his side to the semi-finals of the competition.

Whilst the France captain had the tendency to flit out of the game, he nonetheless proved the difference on the night, netting the brace that allowed Les Parisiens to progress. Whilst Luis Enrique sought to emphasise PSG’s collective performance, he also singled out individuals for praise, noting the performances of Ousmane Dembélé, Vitinha and Mbappé.

“Mbappé was the undisputable leader of the team. It was the pressure that he applied with Ousmane and Bradley (Barcola) that allowed us to press with five men and when he leads by example, the team is a lot stronger,” said Luis Enrique in his post-match press conference.
