Karim Benzema in talks over Saudi switch

With a departure from Saudi Arabia ruled out, Karim Benzema’s (36) options to leave Al-Ittihad this month are limited. According to L’Équipediscussions to send the Frenchman to another club in Riyadh are ongoing.

Earlier this month, AFP reported that Benzema had asked to leave Al-Ittihad, just months after arriving on a free transfer from Real Madrid. Whilst the Frenchman’s entourage have denied the reports, interested clubs have begun to circle, amongst them, formative club Olympique Lyonnais and Manchester United.

However, Saudi Arabian authorities want to prevent Benzema from returning to Europe at all costs, in a move that would damage the image of the Saudi Super League. With just eight days to go until the season restarts in the Gulf State, L’Équipe reveal that negotiations to move Benzema to another club in the Saudi capital of Riyadh are underway. The identity of the club has not been revealed. Al-Ittihad must, however, first give the green light to the move, which they are yet to do.
