Kylian Mbappé to get a taste of potential future Barcelona rivalry

Despite a lack of official confirmation from either Paris Saint-Germain or Kylian Mbappé (25) himself, it is widely expected that the French forward will sign for Real Madrid in the summer. Tonight, Mbappé will sample the atmosphere of the Merengue’s arch rivals Barcelona as his side bid to overcome a 3-2 first leg deficit from last week.

After a disappointing performance in the first leg, PSG’s record goalscorer will be desperate to make his mark at Montjuic, Barcelona’s temporary home whilst the iconic Camp Nou undergoes renovations. Indeed, the forward received heavy criticism from the French, but especially Spanish media following last week’s Parc des Princes defeat, with Marca claiming “Koundé has eaten Mbappé and AS going as far as referring to him as a “Shadow”. It was however Catalan-based Sport that was the most cutting:

“Mbappé was more noticeable for his constant contestations of refereeing decisions and berating his teammates than for his potential to change the game. In fact, Mbappé had underestimated Barca, an arrogance that cost him dear on Wednesday night. Koundé highlighted all of his weaknesses, of which there are many”.

Bitter? Perhaps, but that is the nature of the El Clasico rivalry that France’s footballing talisman will have to endure should he make the move to the Spanish capital as expected. We’ll see if he can respond tonight on the field.
