‘Let’s stop the useless debates’ – Daniel Riolo calls on Luis Enrique to use Kylian Mbappé

Kylian Mbappé (25) was flawless last night in a performance against Real Sociedad that demonstrated exactly what Paris Saint-Germain will be missing next season.

The Frenchman looks certain to be leaving his hometown club at the end of his contract in June and it has put the onus on him and PSG to finally deliver a Champions League to the city

It should be a shared unifying goal for the two parties before their eventual divorce, and yet since Mbappé reportedly told the club of his plans to leave, there has been a growing tension surrounding his role in the team

The past few weeks have seen Mbappé benched ahead of the match against FC Nantes and then substituted early against Stade Rennais and AS Monaco. It was only against Real Sociedad that Mbappé returned to his usual status as an untouchable presence on the pitch.

The result was as you might expect from arguably the best player in the world. He was inspired as the focal point for the team’s attack as he scored twice in a cruising 2-1 victory (4-1 on aggregate) into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

‘Take advantage of Mbappé, play him, try an adventure in the Champions League’

On After Foot RMC, Daniel Riolo, who has been highly critical of Luis Enrique’s use of Mbappé, called on the manager to open his eyes. “In this crazy country, people who have followed [football] for years and think that Mbappé is not essential. Journalists are swallowing Luis Enrique’s pills that we have to prepare for next season.”

Riolo continued, “You know what’s going to happen that he has to go. You have him, you know you’ve screwed up, but you have him for one last year, the only thing to do is make the most of it. Forget the rest and forget all the other debates. It’s his last year, and there’s no one better than him and he’s the one who’ll unlock these situations. Let’s stop the useless debates.”

Once more Riolo called on Luis Enrique to utilise his star, “Put him on the left, it’s his best position, invent all the other systems you want like Dembélé at the number ten tonight. But there, take advantage, play him, try an adventure in the Champions League, and maybe you’ll gey lucky.”
