Game of the week: OGC Nice  v AS Monaco, Sunday 19:45 (UK)

This is one of the most important Côte d’Azur derbies in a long time. Both are well in contention for Champions League football for next season, and the motivation to boost their hopes and dent the hopes of their rival is huge for both sides. Nice go into the match the more confident. Their draw against Brest meant that they lost ground on PSG, but they kept Monaco and Brest at bay. After a blip in December, Nice are well and truly back on-track and their defensive solidity has very much returned. Francesco Farioli was particularly pleased with his side’s aggression and organisation during what was an exciting and tactically intriguing draw against Brest. At the Allianz Riviera, Nice haven’t conceded since 10th December and incredibly, they have conceded just two goals at home all season. The other goal came on the opening day of the season against Lille.

The omens aren’t good for Monaco. Adi Hütter’s side were an attacking juggernaut at the start of the campaign, even if they were significantly overperforming on their xG. The goals have dried up in recent times, and whilst Wissam Ben Yedder is enjoying a purple patch, scoring in each of his last six games, the goals are not being shared. Les Monégasques looked particularly short of ideas for much of last weekend’s draw against Le Havre, however, Monaco will be bolstered by the return of Folarin Balogun, who has now shaken off a shoulder injury. He will have to show his best form to get the Principality club back on-track after they dropped out of the Champions League places for the first time all season.
