Game of the week:  RC Lens v OGC Nice, Saturday 20:00 (UK)

Nice continued their slide with a shock home defeat against Montpellier. It is now fair to say that the wheels have come off and Francesco Farioli needs to show himself capable of putting them back on. Set-pieces have become a problem for Nice, even prior to their recent slide, which sees them winless in their last six. That was once again their undoing against Montpellier, who like many teams, were happy to see Farioli’s side control possession. The problem for Nice is doing something with the ball and despite the exciting attacking arsenal at the club, there is a lack of creativity and incision.

That has been the case throughout the season, but with Jean-Clair Todibo and Dante looking less assured at the back, that lack of attacking output has become highly problematic. Todibo was involved in an altercation with the Nice fans after Friday night’s defeat and there is now somewhat of a crisis engulfing the club.

The manager seems impervious to this; he has shown more than enough to have plenty of credit in the bank and it does feel as though there is still a project building, however, in the short term, Europe is slipping out of reach.

Lens could inflict further misery. With victory over Brest last weekend, they leapfrogged Nice into fifth. Les Sang et Or were perhaps lucky to take all three points. They didn’t create much and had to survive a late onslaught, however, the victory must not be understated. Lens ended Brest’s 13-game unbeaten run, which is no small feat. They are right in this race for Europe and you’d fancy them to get a result at home against a struggling Nice.
