Ligue 1 Predictions, Round 28

GFFN editor-in-chief  Luke Entwistle and GFFN’s  Raphaël Jucobin face off in our Ligue 1 predictions competition. It’s three points for a correct score, two points for a correct score difference, and one point for a correct result. Who will come out on top at the end of the season?

Raphaël: 136

Luke: 151

Game of the week:  Lille OSC v Olympique de Marseille, Friday 20:00 (UK)

Form suggests that Lille should have few difficulties against Marseille. Les Dogues went unbeaten in Ligue 1 in March and crucially didn’t lose against Rennes, Brest and Lens, all of whom are direct rivals for the European places. However, things don’t get any easier for Paulo Fonseca’s side with Marseille and then Monaco coming up later this month. On top of that, Lille must juggle their Europa Conference League obligations. With a first-leg against Aston Villa coming up in mid-week, is there a threat of a lack of focus or a switch in focus? Aston Villa certainly represented the most difficult draw for Lille and should the latter make it through to the semi-final, there will be confidence of potentially making it all the way. The match against Marseille, a team that can match Lille in terms of quality, is perhaps ill-timed.

Even more so given Marseille’s defeat against PSG. The honeymoon period is over for Jean-Louis Gasset, who has now lost his last three in all competitions. OM should have exploited their numerical advantage better against Les Parisiens, and the defeat not only constitutes a significant mental blow but also a very real blow in the race for the European places. The Champions League was always the objective for Les Phocéens, however, they are now seven points behind Lille, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot, with seven games to go. It is a classic six-pointer and Marseille can’t afford to sit back. A win is a must.
