Manchester City ‘relieved’ by Kylian Mbappé’s Real Madrid move

Whilst Kylian Mbappé’s (25) move from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid is not completed, it seems inevitable. Speaking to RMC Sportjournalist Julien Laurens has stated that the Frenchman’s decision to join Los Blancos suits reigning European champions Manchester City.

In February, Mbappé told PSG president Nasser Al-Khellaifi that he would be leaving the club upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season. Whilst the France captain reportedly denied the existence of an agreement to join Real Madrid during a gala, attended by Al-Khelaifi, but also Emmanuel Macron, last week, it is expected that he will join the La Liga side in the summer.

It is a signing that paradoxically will please Manchester City. Whilst Mbappé will undoubtedly strengthen a big rival for the UEFA Champions League, it also allows the Cityzens to keep hold of one key asset – Erling Haaland. The Manchester City forward was questioned on his future earlier this week and left the door open to a potential departure. “You never know,” said the forward, who is currently the top scorer in the Premier League.

However, a departure is not forthcoming this summer. “At Manchester City, they are quite relieved by the fact that Kylian is going to Madrid because that closes the door, for now, to a departure or for Haaland, or an approach from Real Madrid,” Laurens told After Foot.
